As a small business, we celebrate our fellow colleagues and small business owners out there in the field who also believe that there is a dream to be followed, a service to be offered, a solution to be created and a community to be created. A special shout out to the #earlychildhood providers who are small businesses and finding a way to bring families what they need. We are honored to work alongside you and believe that together, we can find a way to create meaningful social enterprises. From one small business to another, here's to all the long nights, unanswered questions, big dreams, great staff, unanticipated satisfaction and tremendous impact we all make, together, day in and day out. Cheers to you! Together, we endure. Together, we rise. #smallbusinessweek2024

We have been in conversation with a new partner and were reminded how we love talking about our name at 20 Degrees. 20 Degrees is the ideal angle to skip a rock on water. It is *the* variable that makes the rock go the furthest. But don't believe us, take a moment to watch a video on rock skipping. We also love this because the video also has some elements of our earned revenue workshop in it too. Also, who doesn't love a work video about building a robot?! #rockskipping #anglesmatter https://lnkd.in/e3iUkSyP

Advocacy is a part of our theory of change at 20 Degrees. From the onset, our co-founders, Tom Bartlett and Sara Gibson have felt that systems change was an essential core part of our work. But it was a DC budget that cut an essential program for early childhood educators that had our team literally in the streets today. The Pay Equity Fund helps create a meaningful wage for early childhood educators. We have seen the impact--literally in the financials of the early childhood center's we support through our back office support. When you know the dollars, you can see how much cents this all makes. To cut the program is not in the best interest of the District, of businesses working to make change, of the educators who support families, of families who need the partnership of early childhood educators. Thank you, Kimberly Perry and DC Action and so many others who helped make today's rally possible. Our team of Tom Bartlett, Sara Gibson, and Frances Paul was out early today. We'll be back again soon until this budget is made right. #payequity #ece

The 20 Degrees team is passionate about #earlychildhoodeducation. Through our shared services work and through the business tools we are building, through the many providers we have been in the trenches, we strive to be the most provider-centered partner. Read this important and moving reflection from 20 Degrees Co-Founder and President Tom Bartlett on the budget cuts facing early childhood educators in #thedistrictofcolumbia. This. Is. Not. How. Communities. Thrive. Read below where Tom Says the thing and shares his insight, learned from work alongside providers. Together, we endure. Together, we will rise. https://lnkd.in/e__xyfTW

Irreverent optimist working to change philanthropy and child care systems for the better

I stand with DC's child care providers who are demanding to keep Pay Equity funding intact. We at 20 Degrees have been honored to work alongside DC child care providers through our Shared Services Plus program and back office services. Through our finance, operations and HR service delivery to child care operators, we have seen up close how hard the current business environment is for DC providers, and the women leading these organizations. Over the last year, I've personally built financial tools to help our clients make sense of the Pay Equity program so they could better understand the financial impacts and opportunities the program offered their centers and staff. My colleague, Frances Paul and I have sat with leaders as we've crunched numbers, think through HR strategies and prepared them for conversations with their staff. To be clear, Pay Equity wasn't perfect, but it was a HUGE bright spot. Child care has always been a tough business - that's true especially now as decades of chronic underinvestment and pandemic workforce shifts have caused many educators to leave the field altogether in search of higher pay and benefits. There's been a shuttering of businesses as a result, leaving families with fewer options for quality care. The increased investment from DC's Pay Equity program mattered. Nearly all of us got a window into this issue over the past four years, as we personally saw the impact of child care shortages/disruptions during the pandemic. More public investment into this backbone industry is desperately needed as we’ve gotten by as a society by underpaying and undervaluing women, especially Black and Brown women who largely make up the workforce in DC and elsewhere. Should the budget pass as-is, the wage loss for early educators will be disastrous with a near equal impact to the center operators who will be gutted in trying to run their businesses and attract talent to do so. We know the conversation is just getting started here and we're hopeful sound business and policy will win the day. But we have a long way to go both in hitting the right outcome as well as restoring trust across the sector. We're heartened that members of the DC Council like Christina Henderson get this issue and remain committed to strengthening child care for the District's economy. DC needs a strong child care sector and I look forward to, alongside my amazing colleagues, being part of the solution for how we get there. #fundpayequity #ece #childcare #justgettingstarted https://lnkd.in/ewpMWgrD

If you are starting to think about the election and what it means for your fundraising program, we recommend listening to it. A few things that surprised us and were bright spots. 1. Since 1979, there have been 11 presidential elections. In 9 of 11, there was an increase in giving—one year where it stayed the same-in 1980. And one year, it went down--and that was 2008 (but the last 100 days of the year is when the economy crashed). It is possible that this election is so long and a rematch that no one is excited about. This distraction may linger longer. Takeaway: stay focused and use the election to talk about your issue since, presumably, the national conversation also involves your issues. 2. Don't forget young people. They want in the game and are giving. But they need to be engaged and seen. 3. Planned giving--Big wealth transfer is still coming. The first estate plan is on average at age 44, and the first planned gift is at age 53. Do you have board members who are remotely in that age? Or younger? More to say here, but it was a great listen. https://lnkd.in/edX26qW2

We are working on finding new forms of revenue that can pay for general operating expenses. Earned revenue and Enterprise Capital are two actual pathways to operating dollars that can be helpful. And, it still isn't the full picture. General operating needs and requests aren't going anywhere. To that end, here is a decent read on how to approach the ever necessary GOS request. #nonprofit #fundraising https://lnkd.in/gtAZyS5f
