About us
Bridges to Independence is the bridge that leads individuals and families out of homelessness and into stable, independent futures. We offer a continuum of aid and support for all family members, helping them attain financial security and move forward into self-sufficiency. As homelessness is often episodic, our other priority is working closely with former clients to ensure they are able to remain securely housed and do not fall into homelessness again. A private, nonprofit organization, Bridges has been working with and for homeless families since 1985, when we were founded as the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless.

This month, just before Mother's Day, a mom in Arlington will find herself unexpectedly homeless. It will be the lowest point of her life, having stability ripped from the family and facing uncertainty, with two to three children relying on her for support and care. At Bridges, we not only provide stability for families experiencing homelessness but also the wrap-around services to help everyone deal with the trauma of homelessness. These additional services are crucial to breaking the poverty cycle for children experiencing homelessness. 🌟 Meet Tania! 🌟 Tania is a transitional-aged youth (18-24 years old) who came to Bridges emergency shelter for families, Sullivan House, in 2021. From conversations, staff learned that Tania had suffered childhood trauma. Tania agreed to speak with a therapist because she trusted the Bridges staff. Her case manager contacted the Department of Behavioral Health to get her the help she needed to care for her mental health. Today, she's not just surviving but thriving. She's managing college, a full-time job, and therapy sessions, all while honing her life skills at our workshops. "I couldn't do it all if I wasn't taking care of my mental health," Tania said to our staff. With Bridges ' help, Tania is growing into a self-sufficient adult, proving that with the proper support, individuals can overcome their past and build a brighter future.
