Happy National Small Business Week! I used to be self-deprecating that I am still a small business because I am bad at business. But over the past 10 years I realized I just define success differently. To me, a successful business is one that makes an impact and improves the world and mankind in some way. I believe the employees of a successful company enable greater impact together as a team than the individuals could accomplish by themselves. I do not solve for profit or expansion or share holder value (don't have share holders). Money is the fuel that allows me and my amazing staff to make positive change in the world. Nothing more. I think we have lost our way when companies boast about money raised or stock value rather than impact created for their clients. And I urge investors to think more about ROI based on positive change than finances. Let's start rethinking and redefining what a 'successful business' looks like. (this picture is from 2018...anyone remember us from those days?)

Today for Small Business week we are talking about our first build as Building Momentum. This is the first training lab for Marine Maker in 2017. We landed the contract and then didn't have the funds in hand to buy the trailer and build it out. So the #pivot came in the way of a loan company who was very friendly for veterans and small businesses, thanks Streetshares. Then about two years later when this trailer had seen hundreds of students and thousands of miles across the US we had another #pivot. Classes needed to fit more than 8 students so we started building labs across the Marine Corps. We now have built over 35 Innovation labs across the DoD, Government, and for non-profits. Each with their own #pivots along the way. Does anyone else remember this trailer? #marinemaker #learning #buildmo #innovationbootcamp

It is National Small Business week! We have proudly been in operation for almost 10 years and through every trial have kept the doors open. We believe Small Business only survives if the leaders know how to pivot. So this week we wanted to share some #pivots. This first one is less of a pivot and more of a good trip down memory lane. This is our old workshop, one step up from Brad Halseys basement where we began, but only one. Notice the plywood walls and warehouse feel. This workshop held up to 5 companies at one time all operating. We were a WeWork with tools, an idea we would #pivot away from. In our bullpen (the upstairs portion) we could all hold hands without ever leaving our desks. To give privacy we turned old Shopbot boxes into small working studios with electricity. This is what we now affectionately call "The Shed" that makes us appreciate every square foot we currently occupy. Who knew us at the Shed? #buildingmomentum #learning #theshed

Two BEAUTIFUL sights this morning at Build Mo HQ in Alexandria. 1. An empty office. 2. An empty classroom. That is because the 12 students that have been going through sUAS training and all our trainers are out at a flight day. Students will get flight time with the drones they built from the ground up and our FAA certified trainers will be their to guide them. They will not only fly their drones but they will try to complete a set of missions, fix their drone in the field with limited resources, and then take it ALL home with them so they can keep practicing. This 5 day course is not just a "learn to fly course" but is teaches drones from build basics all the way through to flight. We will be offering this class in our by the seat model in August. Do you want to join? #innovationbootcamp #buildmo #training #sUAS #DoD #militarytraining #learning

Who else gets to spend their Fridays flying drones for work? 🚁 Let me give you a glimpse into one of the many perks of working at Building Momentum: flying drones! And not just any drones – we're talking about drones that we build ourselves. It's an experience that not only enriches our workdays but also hones our skills as Part 107 pilots. Picture this: five immersive days dedicated to mastering the art of small unmanned aerial systems. From assembling individual components to constructing a fully functional drone, our training delve into the intricacies of drone design, flight characteristics, and FAA regulations. But it doesn't stop there. We explore everything from Pixhawk systems to autonomous flight and unique payloads, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of sUAS technology. Participants not only build their own drones but also learn safe and effective operation techniques. Safety is paramount, and we ensure our students are well-versed in operating ground control stations while adhering to FAA laws. And on the final day? It's all about taking flight and putting newfound skills to the test. P.S. drone footage coming soon!
