Enriching lives and expanding opportunities for all children and adults in our communities
About us
For more than 100 years, Easterseals has been the indispensable community resource for people and families living —and thriving with — disabilities in DC, Maryland and Virginia. Through the innovative, inclusive and person-centered work we do, we are strengthening our community and changing the way the world defines and views disability. We are committed to making profound, positive differences in people’s lives every day. We champion all of life’s moments. What connects us and brings us closer together. All that makes us different, and yet, very much the same. That’s why, for the over 100 years, we’ve provided our communities with the powerful advocacy and life changing services for children and adults with disabilities, veterans and older adults – and those who care for them. Today, we honor that legacy with an eye to the future—the next 100 years. And we’re committed to building a world where everyone is 100% included. All abilities. Limitless possibilities. Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (#GAAD) and a great reminder that accessibility impacts us all! When we design a world that is accessible for people with disabilities, everyone benefits. The common example of this is curb cuts, which, by allowing wheelchair users to easily access sidewalks, also helped anyone pushing a stroller or pulling anything on wheels. Do you have other examples of accessibility benefiting us all? Leave a comment below and remember, accessibility is not an extra box to check – it is a core requirement! #EastersealsDCMDVA #Easterseals #GAAD24 #GAAD2024

The Ashburn Assembly, International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, organized and led a Spring Fling for Easterseals families at the Jo Ann & Carl McNair Community Child Development Center last week! Their chapter president, Ella, has chosen Easterseals for her charity this term. In addition to the Spring Fling, she is fundraising for Easterseals and will present the donation at the end of her term in August. Thank you, Rainbow Girls!

The Menkiti Group ensured our teachers felt the love for #TeacherAppreciationWeek at our Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Child Development Center by bringing them breakfast and new books for their students. The students really enjoyed being read to by our new friends! #EarlyChildhoodEducation #InclusiveEducation

Tuesday, May 14th at 12 pm ET, offered in connection with our partners at the Cohen Veterans Network Military Family Clinics at Easterseals DC MD VA & The Up Center! Join comedian Amelia Bane for a comedy writing workshop. Give yourself a break from your routine and take some time to laugh in community. Each workshop, we will read a humor piece and react to it together. After some discussion about technique and what makes comedy writing work, we’ll write our own pieces. We’ll come together at the end of the hour to hear a few participants share their work. You never have to share if you’re not in the mood. Come write with us or just come laugh with us! "Amelia has such a welcoming inclusive energy. She made me feel good about the hardest writing, comedy, just for trying!" -Participant Open to all, and no experience required. Use the link below to join! Amelia Bane is a writer, improviser, and filmmaker based in Brooklyn. She trained at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and has performed improv and sketch comedy at theaters all over NYC. Amelia holds degrees in Literature and Film from The College of William & Mary and Goddard College. It was so great to see Easterseals DC MD VA and its CEO Jon Horowitch celebrating exemplary advocates for veterans and military families, children and adults with disabilities, and low-income families at their 20th Annual Advocacy Awards. Not only did the ceremony recognize key advocates working to enrich lives and expand opportunities for people with disabilities and military backgrounds, but it also raised over $950,000 for Easterseals' education, healthcare, and employment programs that served over 4,000 children and adults last year in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia! Strong voices for inclusion and accessibility, Senator Susan Collins and Senator Mark Warner each received the Legislative Advocate Award for their support of people with disabilities, family caregivers, veterans and military families, and early childhood education. I am inspired everyday by the incredible advocates expanding opportunities for communities nationwide and am so glad to see our Affiliates celebrating their great work!
