During Superstorm Sandy in 2012, flooding from Newark Bay damaged the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission’s wastewater treatment plant, rendering it inoperable for several days. In response to this vulnerability, PVSC initiated its Resiliency Program to enhance the plant’s resilience to future extreme weather events. The floodwall and stormwater collection and pumping systems are on track for completion in 2025, further fortifying PVSC’s wastewater facility and surrounding infrastructure against future challenges. Last month, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln announced the four-story addition to the school’s iconic Architecture Hall will bear the name HDR Pavilion. This honor is in recognition of a generous gift from HDR, celebrating their longstanding collaboration with UNL’s architecture program, which is commemorating its 50th anniversary this week. “This is a tremendous investment by HDR into our College of Architecture and its students,” said UNL Chancellor Rodney D. Bennett. “Our experiences are shaped by the environments in which we live, work and grow and HDR Pavilion is a leading example of how collaborations with industry leaders can enrich UNL’s educational experience.” The Phase II expansion, designed by HDR and NADAAA Inc., showcases mass timber construction and features 31 studios, a student lounge, and crit spaces, creating a flexible, sustainable learning environment.
