Creating a more human society where people with and without intellectual disabilities share life together.
About us
L’Arche Greater Washington, D.C. is creating a more human society where people with and without intellectual disabilities share life together. We celebrate the unique value of every person, recognizing and accepting our need of one another and building relationships that transform all of us. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, L’Arche GWDC provides housing and support services to adults with intellectual disabilities, and serves hundreds of people in the wider community, of many different backgrounds, by offering a place of belonging and growth. Our community life centers on relationships, led by “core members,” the adults with intellectual disabilities who live in L’Arche homes. People come from all over the country and the world to visit L’Arche and learn from core members, our mission, and our model. In our four homes, two in DC and two in Arlington, we eat, play, learn, laugh, grieve, and pray together. We do with and not for – growing and supporting one another in a mutually transformative way. We are an inter-denominational Christian community that welcomes people of all faiths or none. L’Arche Greater Washington, D.C. is part of the international federation of L’Arche communities, committed to making known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities all over the world.

Shout out to Brian and all our amazing volunteers who make are homes and community happier, healthier, and fuller!
When Brian Tefft moved to Washington DC 20 years ago, a young man with a big smile made friends with Brian and his wife at church. His name was Andrew and he was a resident at L’Arche of Greater Washington DC, which provides homes for adults with intellectual disabilities. “Despite being completely nonverbal, he was basically the informal welcoming committee – he loved to meet new friends and make people smile,” Brian said. He’d always love to shake your hand and then introduce you to anyone else around by passing your hand to them. We often visited for dinner at the L’Arche home where he lived and enjoyed spending time reading to him.” Andrew passed away during the pandemic. Brian and his wife decided they wanted to become more involved in the community where he lived, as a way to honor his memory. Brian, a researcher with the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, volunteers with L'Arche Greater Washington, DC (GWDC) almost every weekend, doing basic maintenance, repairs, and handyman projects and visiting with members. During National Volunteer Week, we honor Brian and all the other associates who make their communities a better place by giving their time. #CommitmentToCommunity #NationalVolunteerWeek

“This is what it looks like when health care ‘does better’ by people with disabilities... 'Health care is about helping people to participate fully in their lives,' Kripke said, 'not just about curing disease.'" Read the full article and learn more about what's possible when people work together to make living freer and fuller a reality for all, something we work toward at L'Arche every day. https://lnkd.in/dxU-fFnW "...the freedom to live fuller and healthier lives remains elusive for many. Patients too frequently meet doctors and nurses who are untrained and uncomfortable caring for them; struggle to enter inaccessible exam rooms; and encounter insurers who deny their requests for essential equipment." This reality remains all too true for disabled people. It's exactly why we created our free MyVoice Curriculum: Amplifying the Voices of People with Intellectual Disabilities in the Medical System. Happy World Down Syndrom Day! 3/21 for the triplication of Chromosome 21. Thrice as nice, as we like to say 😌🤙 Sarah, Bruce, and Sito have been on Capitol Hill all day today advocating with National Down Syndrome Society. Something we're very excited about is the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act. Currently, if you have over $2,000 in assets, you lose your SSI benefit. $2,000?!?!?! That buys you like a stick of gum. But seriously, this act would increase the limit to $10,000 for individuals and $20,000 for couples. Let's get it done!

ANCOR and United Cerebral Palsy released their 2024 Case for Support, looking at how well all 50 states and D.C. support intellectually and developmentally disabled people in their communities. A key finding: "Hourly wages for direct support professionals (DSP) increased from $13.61 in 2020 to $14.41 in 2021. This marks the second consecutive year of wage increases made possible, at least in part, to temporary emergency funding authorized in response to the COVID-19 pandemic." While it's good that these wages are increasing, it's concerning that the increase comes from temporary resources, and $14.41/hour is still not a living wage for many people. It's also well below what entry-level jobs in industries such as food service offer. Being a DSP (also called Assistant in L'Arche) requires an EXCEPTIONAL amount of skill across MANY areas (advocacy, community organizing, medical care, cultural humility, emotional intelligence, direct care, financing, end-of-life planning, mutual relationship building, household co-management, the ability to chill and have fun and let people take risks. And that's just on a Tuesday!) If you haven't already encountered the need to find or receive direct care, chances are you will. This issue impacts all of us. It's why we work so hard and are so incredibly grateful for our donors, who make $20/hour starting pay for our assistants possible. Doesn't solve everything, but it's a start. Meaningful pay for meaningful work! https://lnkd.in/eDAk67u3 https://lnkd.in/gcW6RZcf
