About us
At Volunteers of America, we are more than a nonprofit organization. We are a ministry of service that includes 16,000 paid, professional employees dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. Through our hundreds of human service programs, including housing and healthcare, Volunteers of America touches the lives of 1.5 million people in over 400 communities in 46 states as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico each year. Since 1896, we have supported and empowered America's most vulnerable groups, including veterans, at-risk youth, the frail elderly, men and women returning from prison, homeless individuals and families, people with disabilities, and those recovering from addictions. Our work touches the mind, body, heart — and ultimately the spirit — of those we serve, integrating our deep compassion with highly effective programs and services. Approximately 60,000 volunteers throughout the country help our employees deliver these life-changing services

Having a place to call home has no age limit. At Nottoli Place, one of our affordable housing properties in Sacramento (Volunteers of America Northern California and Northern Nevada), we are serving seniors at risk of homelessness or experiencing housing instability. From art classes to warm meals, Nottoli Place has become a place where older adults are empowered to restart their life. The community recently celebrated its first anniversary, underscoring the dozens of seniors who have found a home at Nottoli Place. Volunteers are making a difference in our communities every day. In Salt Lake City, Volunteers of America, Utah recently held a volunteer appreciation, sponsored by Costa Vida. The evening was filled with sweet sentiments, a delicious dinner, and recognitions of the inspiring volunteerism in their community. Tying up the evening, VOA Utah President & CEO Kathy Bray shared how volunteer leaders are stepping up all over the community to improve the lives of the people they serve. Emily Gleason, VOA’s High School science teacher, is all about helping students embrace their inner scientist! Her background in biotechnological education has resulted in hands-on activities and resources that make her lessons come to life. Since being at the high school, Ms. Gleason has found immense joy in watching her students investigate the world around them while helping them succeed inside and outside the classroom. For Mr. Johnny Hedgepeth (AKA Mr. H.), teaching is more than empowering young learners – it is a way of giving back to his community. Since 2006, Mr. H. has worked at alternative learning centers for underserved students across the nation. He found his way to our VOA High School in Minneapolis in 2015 (Volunteers of America of - Minnesota and Wisconsin), and he loves that it is a place where his core values intersect with a rewarding career. The VOA High School serves students in grades 10-12 up to the age of 21 seeking their high school diploma.
